Apart is a 3D puzzle-platformer meant to send the player on an emotional journey.
This game is meant to create a narrative for the player based on certain emotions the designers want to create. In this case, the designers hope to create a feeling of loneliness in the player by the end of the game.
As the narrative designer for this game, I have encountered several challenges. One of the major ones was getting players to have an emotional reaction to the game. For a long while, we were testing without sound in the game. This made it much more difficult to communicate a sense of loneliness through gameplay.
Another major challenge was getting testers to feel as though there were narrative to the experience. Once we began testing multiple levels at a time, this challenge lessened, but, in some cases, is still present.
