HomeMaker is digital experimental narrative RPG where the player is thrown into life as a stay-at-home parent.
I began this project with the hopes of creating an RPG experience that was designed to convey a message to players about stay-at-home parents. Ideally, the player would see him/herself as the layer character and be placed into a fantasy where he/she was a stay-at-home parent who was required to take care of everything on his/her own.
The biggest challenged I faced with this project was finding a mechanic that really communicated the right sense of gameplay. Even towards the end of the project, the mechanics were far from perfect. I ended up using a slew of mechanics by developing several mini-games that the player was required to play in order to complete tasks around the house. This caused the play to be less than cohesive, making the player feel like the experience was disjointed and unimmersive.
